In life, achieving success doesn’t occur randomly but requires diligent research and preparation. Great scientists, for example, don’t stumble upon innovative solutions through random experimentation; they apply their knowledge systematically. Similarly, successful cooks meticulously consider each ingredient, and farmers factor in various elements like soil, temperature, weather, and light for optimal crop growth.

Investing follows a similar pattern. It should be approached with careful research and a methodical mindset to yield the best outcomes. Success in this realm hinges on research, market familiarity, and understanding the conditions that can foster investment growth.

In a previous post, I stressed the importance of diversifying one’s investment portfolio. Likewise, when exploring new markets or ventures, a thorough market study is a prudent move.

Understanding the Market

The stock market is a complex, ever-evolving environment, making it challenging to determine where and when to invest. Conducting thorough research provides insights into market operations, trends, and sector performance. Analyzing the competitive landscape helps assess market saturation and learn from the successes and failures of major players, guiding your strategy.

Identifying global opportunities entails understanding local customs, business etiquette, economies, currency fluctuations, customer culture, and business regulations. It’s crucial to grasp your target demographics’ problems, and how your solution can address their needs.

Consider the costs of market entry and prepare for potential pricing challenges. Challenges can bring new opportunities, so adaptability is essential. Comprehensive research helps mitigate risks, such as evaluating management capabilities and sector dynamics.

Applying Research

After grasping the fundamentals and market dynamics, informed predictions can safeguard your investments. Begin by setting investment objectives, creating a financial plan, and assessing your risk tolerance. Never invest beyond your means, as it can affect your comfort level with risk.

Diversify your investments, avoiding overinvestment in a single stock. Historically, different asset classes, like stocks, bonds, and cash, do not move in unison, so diversification minimizes the risk of total loss.

Planning Ahead

In any market condition, a low-risk strategy involves paying off high-interest debts and building an emergency fund. Take advantage of employer-sponsored retirement plans to maximize savings. Periodically rebalance your portfolio to maintain your original asset allocation.

Like any skill or business, successful investors must thoroughly research their markets, understand the influencing factors, and cultivate relationships within them. By gaining knowledge and making informed decisions, investors increase their chances of success.

Networking can seem like a daunting prospect. Not everyone is an extrovert, ready to pitch at a moment’s notice to sell their new product, their innovative idea or even themselves as a great prospect for employment or investment.

It is, however, an integral part of business and a necessary skill worth developing. After all, you never know when the opportunity may arise. It can happen at any time, in any place, with anyone.

Benefits of networking

Knowing how to network effectively is vital. It can help small businesses and entrepreneurs grow a strong audience and customer base, it can secure a large client for a major conglomerate or it can encourage significant investment for a new tech startup. It works both ways of course – potential customers and investors want to work with people with whom they feel a connection and shared values.

Turning on the charm doesn’t come naturally to everyone but this necessary aspect of business becomes easier with practice. Rehearse your ‘elevator pitch’, to give you confidence in quickly and efficiently describing all the key messages and major points of all the things you have in your arsenal. The more you push yourself forward, the easier it becomes and while it can make a huge difference for your business, on an individual level your communication skills will drastically improve. Eventually it will become easy to articulate your professional aspirations or effectively explain the benefits of your brand or product.

From the traditional to the digital

The easiest way to expand your network is by going outside and meeting new people.

Certain events such as product launches, gallery openings, or charity galas are well known for being the place to meet the right kinds of people, but in this digital world there are even more options.

Apps like Meetup, Funzing, and AllEvents, have both social and professional events, and the Eventbrite website allows you to search for specific business events in your area. You can filter by your areas of interest and find appropriate gatherings. Be it hiking, wine tasting, or learning a new language.

Facebook groups can be useful to find events, as well as reading reviews and recommendations  written by previous attendees. Adding to the mix, there is a unique business app reminiscent of Tinder, known as Shapr. This app further enhances your ability to find like minded professionals and fosters face-to-face interactions, which are crucial for cultivating a valuable network.

Connections Over Common Ground

What’s important is to build a genuine personal acquaintance before any professional interaction. Business may be about products, profits, portfolios and price, but in reality it’s all about people.

Finding something in common goes a long way to building a relationship with someone new. Are you part of a similar community, do you like the same music, have you visited or lived in the same cities or do you play or watch the same sport?

There is a reason that traditionally the golf course has often been considered the place that business takes place. It provides a tension-free, relatively low-stress environment, allowing you to see how others conduct themselves in a competitive environment.

Networking in strange places

Once you have common ground, you can expand onto business related topics and the world of networking opens up to you. Anywhere and anyone is a potential business connection whether you are hiking the Appalachian Trail or sharing a chalet on Mont Blanc.

It could be the mum you stand next to outside your child’s school waiting to pick the kids up. Perhaps the guy sitting next to you at dinner at your best friend’s birthday party. Is there someone at your church, mosque or synagogue who works in your field? Gyms are also great networking spots, since regulars can build up a rapport with one another.

A great example is sporting events. From the outset there is a common interest and the potential to talk about things that are happening at the event. Deborah Sweeney, CEO of MyCorporation and Forbes contributor, suggests arriving early to walk around and decide with whom you want to network.

Network with people while you’re waiting in line for the newest gadget, perhaps by connecting with them about the product you’re waiting for, before you segway into business talk.

Certain airlines even have an option to choose who to sit next to based on their networking profile, so that you can make the most of being at 30,000 feet.

Social media networking

Social media offers millions of connection opportunities every day – professionally, the most important is arguably Linked In. The most effective methods involved in forging a relationship with the most appropriate people include putting in significant  time and effort.

Research is important. Where are the places that your potential stakeholders are hanging out on the platform? Which groups? Which pages? At first, it’s important to follow what’s happening – who is posting, who is commenting, and who is engaging? Then, start to engage yourself, make insightful comments and observations so that your name gets noticed, before beginning to contribute more and more yourself.

It only takes one engagement, comment or response to break the ice and open the gate to a potential connection. This method may take more time, but it’s more effective than randomly adding people with whom you’ve never interacted.

Has networking changed?

The art of networking hasn’t died, it’s just evolved and changed with time. In a post-pandemic world, where we are more used to meeting on a screen, social media and apps and digital platforms have become a huge support for initial interactions. In truth, however, they are mainly a facilitation of an ultimate face-to-face meeting. All the tweeting and DMing in the world cannot replace looking someone in the eye and shaking their hand.

Business will always, at its core, be about people meeting people, and we will always live in a world where sharing a beer or a coffee, breaking bread and chatting over dinner are always going to be fantastic methods of cementing relationships.

With every investment comes some form of risk, be it low or high, as an investment portfolio grows, the risks build up. There is one great investing strategy that can be used to mitigate risks, and that is diversification. By having a diverse portfolio, the investment money is not concentrated in a single asset class, sector, or company, but rather, it’s spread across a range of different asset classes, sectors, and companies.

Each investment portfolio acts as a financial map and its future heavily relies on its diversification. Before making any investments, it’s essential to explore all the different options, including different company sizes and geographical locations, and adjusting accordingly to mitigate risk. There are multiple ways to diversify a portfolio, each of which has their own advantages and disadvantages that need to be considered, from investing in different types of assets and industries to the locations and sizes of individual companies.

Don’t Put All Your Eggs in One Basket

In layman’s terms, diversification of a portfolio means “not putting all your eggs in one basket”. Spreading investments across different types of regions, securities, businesses, and industries is a winning strategy. By not keeping all your investments in one place, it is theoretically impossible to completely lose in all your investments. Furthermore, diversification offers stronger, long-term returns and has been shown to maximise overall return.

How Does Diversification Mitigate Risk?

Mathematical models have shown that diversification is a winning investment strategy in offsetting risk exposure since it offers a form of guaranteed protection against any significant losses. This is achieved by starting from the top, by first diversifying across different asset classes, such as bonds, stocks, and private equity. Professionals say that there is a negative correlation between bonds and stocks, meaning that they move in the opposite direction, so when bond yields are rising, stock prices are usually falling. Investing in both types of assets mitigates the risk of only losing.

Your portfolio can then be further diversified within each class, i.e., across multiple sectors and industries. A diverse portfolio provides something to fall back on when a single industry takes a hit, as opposed to one that consists of investments in one industry alone. This is true for any industry, be it tech, energy, or pharmaceuticals, it’s always best to spread investments across different companies in different industries.

The Importance of Mitigating Risk

Markets are constantly changing, and the future is highly uncertain, therefore it is necessary to minimize investment risk, and invest in a diverse range of things that are not exposed to the same risk, thus mitigating the risk of total loss. It’s impossible to predict how any one industry or company will perform, the key is to have a portfolio with a variety of investments that perform differently in similar markets, rather than buying assets that move in lockstep with one another.

It’s important to research each sector ensuring that you’re investing in the sectors that are most likely to grow in the future, not forgetting that different sectors will be affected by different economic situations. Investing in companies that operate in different sectors, e.g., healthcare and automotive industries, reduces the dependency on a single sector thus mitigating the risk.

Understanding How To Diversify An Investment Portfolio

We’ve already discussed spreading investments across different asset classes. Having money in investments with different returns and risks is the first step to diversifying a portfolio. The next step is to diversify across different industries and sectors. A portfolio that already has investments in companies in the healthcare industry may consider investing in a company that manufactures products in the automotive industry. For example, the S&P 500 consists of stocks of companies in 11 different industries, ranging from consumer staples and real estate to energy and communication services.

Not only is it important to invest in companies in different industries, it’s also critical to diversify the sizes and locations of the companies. Consider investing in both small startups as well as big and developed companies. Investing across a diverse range of countries with different currencies will mitigate risk from a political and economic standpoint. As a result, diverse portfolios tend to outperform more focussed portfolios over time.

A Diverse Portfolio Will Protect You

The importance of mitigating risks is of great benefit. While there may still be loss in some places with a diverse portfolio, there will never be an overall loss across the board. For example, in the 2007-2009 global recession, industries such as real estate were heavily affected, but other sectors such as healthcare were left untouched.

The world is a big place, and there are different trends everywhere, meaning it’s always safe somewhere.  Evaluate the risks of each geographical location and allocate your investments throughout different countries. A diverse portfolio protects you from high risk, and overall has beneficial outcomes with better long-term success and returns.
